8.5m km2 and 157m inhabitants (which are expected to doble in 34 years), it is the largest and most populated latin american country but speaks portuguese and not spanish like do the others. It is nearly half the size of south America or 16 times that of France. It has the most water carrying river in the world, the Amazonas.

Brazil has common fronteers with all the countries of south america but two, Chile and Ecuador, it is only slightly smaller than the USA in surface and the equator crosses its central part but extreme maximum temperatures usually do not excede 39 oC to be compared with the 45 oC reached at General Acha (La Pampa) more south in Argentina. The largest cities are Sao Paolo 16.4m, Rio de Janeiro 10m (which became the capital in 1763 after Bahía and now the capital is Brasilia), Belo Horizonte 3.9m, Porto Alegre 3.4m,San Salvador or Bahia (the former capital) 2.8m.

Black people where brought to the country during the years of slavery. From 1884 to 1943 the following nationals entered Bazil: Portuguese 1.2m, Italian 1.1m, Spaniards 0.6m, Japanese 0.18m, Russians 0.18m. As local indians we can mention the Caraibes, the Botocudos, the Galibis and the Guaranis.

The 22nd april 1500, Pedro-Alvarez Cabral arrived to the coasts of Brazil near what would be Bahia. This started the Poruguese domination of this region. From then on France, Spain and Holand tried to keep part of the country and sometimes achieved it for a period of time.In 1808 the royal family , ousted from portugal by french troops of Napoleon came to Brazil and left their son which was made brazilian emperor in 1822 as don Pedro the 1st. In 1889 the republic was founded. During the 2nd world war Brazil entered it on the side of the allied and not at last moment as did Argentina whose army had a german military tradition.

More than 90% of the population are Roman Catholic making Brazil the country of the world with the largest amount of population of that religion. Brazil is the second world producer of oranges after the USA and produces more meat than Argentina. They own with Paraguay and Argentina the worlds largest electric power generating dam: Itaipú.

Vacations in Brazil are a most charming experience. Local people are of a happy nature and their plentiness of fruits is very agreable for breakfast. The coffe is always delicious and their sea is usually warm. The best vacation places appear to be on the sea shore. However beware of the rainy months and ask it specially from your travel agency as we have had once superb vacations planed in a continuous rainstorm. A place appreciated by Argentine tourists are the beaches near Florianopolis but if you come from abroad Rio de Janeiro is also a must and we would also include Bahia as an important city to see to understand Brazil. We even wonder if the carnival is not more interesting and natural at Bahia than at Rio.
