Our Lady (of Paris, Notre Dame )
Church of Paris France situated in the island of the Citée. Before there were some sanctuaries at its place. In 1161 the bishop Maurice de Sully decided to replace the sanctuaries by a much larger building. The first stone was placed by the Pope Alexander III; the choir was finished in 1177, most of the remaining construction in 1196. The front part (south) and the towers were finished after 1225, the chapels, not thought of originally were added towards 1235-1250. Todays church is the same that was originally built. The french revolution during which the church was dedicated to the Cult of Reasoning (1793)and after that the Cult of the Supreme Being also used the church as a stocking place for food and destroid most statues. The restauration works were started in 1845 by Lassus and Viollet-le Duc. The cathedral has 130mts long, 108mts wide, an interior height of 35mts and the towers are 69mts heigh. Our Lady of Paris, France is one of the first large gothic Cathedrals.
